and he's even poised to take a pay-cut from £70k-a-week Russian wages
Wigan
boss Roberto Martinez is ready to pull off a transfer coup by signing
Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady for £5million.
Martinez
has agreed a fee with Russian giants Spartak Moscow for the tricky
midfielder, and the 26-year-old is expected to arrive in the UK and sign
for the Latics before Thursday's 11pm deadline.
Former Celtic star McGeady may even take a pay-cut to come to English football - he is on around £70,000-a-week in Russia.
The
transfer would be a triumph for Martinez, who has been haggling for
weeks to land McGeady, and also for Wigan supremo Dave Whelan, who found
the cash to make it happen.
McGeady is keen to come ‘home’ and
team up with old Celtic pal Shaun Maloney - and help Latics in their
annual fight to avoid relegation, which continued with a fightback from
2-0 down to draw with Stoke on Tuesday.
Highly-rated McGeady has
18 months left on his contract with Spartak and Wigan moved quickest,
amid rival interest from Sunderland, when they decided to cash in.
